Kundrakudi Murugan temple is situated near Kundrakudi, on the fringes of Karaikudi in Tamilnadu's Sivaganga District. The Temple's main deity is Shanmuganadar, and the goddesses are Valli and Deivayanai.
About the Temple:
The temple is built on a small hill, and it is regarded as one of the significant examples of rock-cut temples built by the Pandyas.
In the main sanctum, Lord Shanmuga, who has six faces and twelve arms is seated in a magnificently carved peacock. Both the Lord and the peacock are made of monolithic stone. Valli and Deivayanai are on each side sitting on a peacock.
It is believed that the Peacock once swallowed Garuda and Swan to show its power to the Asuras. Goddess Saraswathi and Vishnu appealed to Muruga to bring back their vahanas. Lord Muruga cursed the peacock to turn into a hill. The peacock realized its error and traveled to Kundrakudi's Arasavanam to perform penance for Lord Muruga. The peacock was freed from the curse by Lord Muruga, who then made an appearance at this peacock-shaped mountain shrine.
