"The Night of Lord Shiva" is what Shivarathri means.
Shivarathri is the 14th day of every lunar month in India. It is the night before the new moon. Maha Shivarathri happens around February or March.
Maha Shivarathri is the most important of the 12 Shivarathris.
On the night of Maha Shivarathri, it is believed that the positions of the planets will align in such a way that it will cause a natural increase in the amount of energy present in the human system. Because of this, people have believed that staying up all night to meditate or recite Lord Shiva's name was healthy for their physical and spiritual well-being.
To stay awake with your spine vertical throughout the night to allow this natural surge of energies to find its way.
